During the last 30 years, numbers of wild Salmon returning from the sea have fallen by more than half. Wild Salmon and Sea Trout are an important natural resource and we need your help to find out why, and what can be done to stem this decline. Set up in 1967, the Atlantic Salmon Trust is involved in the funding and sponsorship of practical research programmes tackling the problems wild Atlantic Salmon and Sea Trout face today.
The initial aim of ASAP is to collect samples from the majority of salmon rivers on the Western Atlantic coast of Europe and use methods of Genetic Stock Identification (GSI) to effectively, 'genetically type' salmon from particular regions and rivers across the Atlantic Arc Region as defined by the EU. Once this database of genotypes is assembled it is hoped that managers will be able to take a small sample from any salmon caught at sea and quickly assess the population and therefore the river or region of origin.
What is the Salmon & Trout Association?
Formed in 1903, the Salmon & Trout Association (S&TA) is the only UK-wide membership organisation representing the views of game anglers. It is also recognised as the governing body for game angling by Sport England.
So how does S&TA operate?
S&TA has 115,000 individual and club members throughout the UK within a countrywide Branch network. A small professional staff is based in London and Edinburgh and there is access to a full-time lobbyist in Brussels through the European Anglers’ Alliance. The S&TA has excellent contacts in both Houses of Parliament, Scottish Parliament and National Assembly for Wales and the staff have a close working relationship with senior officials in the European Commission, UK Ministries, and the many government agencies.
Trout Unlimited’s mission is to conserve, protect and restore North America’s trout and salmon fisheries and their watersheds.
TU accomplishes this mission on local, state and national levels with an extensive and dedicated volunteer network. TU’s national office, based just outside of Washington, D.C., and its regional offices employ professionals who testify before Congress, publish a quarterly magazine, intervene in federal legal proceedings, and work with the organization’s 152,000 volunteers in 450 chapters nationwide to keep them active and involved in conservation issues.
The Wild Trout Trust (WTT) is a registered charity. It is the only national body dedicated to the protection and survival of this iconic fish species, a living – and too often dying – indicator of the health of the landscape around us.
The WTT was founded as the Wild Trout Society in 1997 and achieved charitable status in 1999. In the few years since, the WTT has established an enviable reputation in the wider conservation field.
The trust is a favoured partner of the Environment Agency and English Nature, both of which fund some of the trust’s key conservation projects. In addition, the trust works with the Wildlife Trusts, the National Trust, the Game Conservancy Trust, the Association of River Trusts and the Loughs Agency in Ireland. It has a respected voice in other forums.
We are a unique organisation which fights pollution and other damage to water environments throughout the UK. Water pollution kills hundreds of thousands of fish each year which has a huge impact on local economies, aquatic wildlife and the enjoyment of angling clubs. Rivers and stillwaters are also under threat from water abstraction, escaped farmed fish, weirs and flood defence works. The ACA aims to stop this damage happening and to seek compensation for our members when it does.
We are currently fighting about 60 legal cases on behalf of our members. We make polluters pay hundreds of thousands of pounds in compensation every year and secure injunctions to stop further damage. For more information about how we work, please visit our website
