PINPOINT is a joint project between the Association of Rivers Trusts and the England Catchment Sensitive Farming Delivery Initiative (ECSFDI) to provide information and advice through Rivers Trusts on reducing diffuse water pollution from agriculture. ECSFDI is a partnership project between Defra, Natural England and The Environment Agency.  PINPOINT builds on the existing ECSFDI programme and extensive Rivers Trust work by widening the availability of advice and incentives to reduce water pollution from agriculture. Professor Malcolm NewsonPinpoint Training Workshop for Rivers Trusts

SEDIMENT MANAGEMENT AT THE CATCHMENT SCALE
Insights to river basin geomorphology and practical delivery of sediment source controls.

Delivered by: Professor Malcolm Newson, Director, Tyne Rivers Trust.
Date & times: 10am, Thursday 10th March – 4pm, Friday 11th March, 2011.
Venue: Charles Cotton Hotel, Hartington, Derbyshire & the River Manifold.
Cost: Free to Rivers Trust staff and active volunteers (including accommodation).

Outline programme

Day one: ‘Guidebook of Applied Fluvial Geomorphology’:

  • What is fluvial geomorphology – how does it fit into general river basin management?
  • Understanding and working with the sediment system of your catchment and river type.
  • A spotter’s guide to fluvial features and their forensic use to diagnose what’s going on.
  • Sediment transport: beyond the mystique! How a basic understanding gives you the edge.
  • Afternoon: Field trip to local sites on the River Manifold.
  • Evening: Bring a problem – mini presentations by delegates with a sediment/erosion/siltation problem, however small.

Day two: ‘Aggravated Erosion and Freshwater habitat siltation’:

  • 'Siltation’ – why the fuss? Digging into the perceived problem. What’s natural; what’s ‘aggravated’?
  • Water Framework Directive, hydromorphological status and sediment pressures: any knowledge is an improvement.
  • Planning a survey of hot-spots, using models, aerial survey and walkover survey.
  • Delivering through source control options and delivering through Stewardship and other partners.
  • Speakeasy conclusion: take-away messages and feedback.

Free Angling Passport start-up materials
Angling Passport schemes open up new waters bringing the joy of the river and fishing to more people than ever before. They enable enterprising fishermen to explore some of the most beautiful and least fished pieces of water we have, and all for only a few pounds. When you set up a scheme through the Rivers Trusts, or buy tickets to go fishing, you know that the benefit will be going straight back into improving the river.

If you would like to set up an Angling Passport scheme using the free website template and other resources, or find out more about where you can fish using a passport across the UK, visit:
