New Trustees for the Rivers Trusts Movement

The Association of River Trusts is delighted to have appointed three new Trustees to add extra strength and experience to its Board.

Rivers Trusts and river improvement groups have expanded in number from 5 in 2004 to more than 35 today in England and Wales and are now delivering a wide and important range of river and catchment improvements.

The new appointments are:

Martyn Howat, who is a Trustee of the Tyne Rivers Trust and was previously Director of Uplands for Natural England.

Martin Ross who is Environmental Manager for South West Water

Andrew Wallace who is Managing Director of RAFTS (Rivers and Fisheries Trusts of Scotland) which is the "umbrella body" for 25 River Trusts in Scotland.

"These are challenging times for all organisations involved with rivers and their catchments!" commented Ian Gregg, Chairman of the Association of Rivers Trusts. "The Environment Agency and Natural England are facing substantial financial cuts at the very time we need to be making progress towards meeting the Water Framework Directive and bringing rivers and lakes to Good Ecological Status. These new appointments will give the River Trusts movement extra experience and confidence to maximise the opportunities that will be available to organisations which can demonstrate innovation and cost effective delivery".
