River Don Catchment Project Officer
24 Month Fixed Term Contract (Full-time), with possible extension for a further two years.

Salary £25,472 FTE plus pension contribution and mileage expenses.
Holiday entitlement of 5 weeks/year FTE.

The Don Catchment Rivers Trust is a charitable organisation part of The Rivers Trust movement, and has the aim of conserving and restoring the rivers Don, Dearne, Rother and other water bodies in South Yorkshire.

The Don catchment is bounded by the Pennines to the west, the Calder and Lower Aire catchments to the north and the Trent catchment to the east and south. From the heights of the Pennines the River Don, the main river in the catchment, flows east through the city of Sheffield to its confluence with the River Ouse in the lowlands around Goole. The combined waters of the Ouse and Don then flow into the Humber Estuary.

The River Rother has its headwaters in the Peak District National Park where its tributary, the River Hipper, rises. From its source the Rother soon flows through urban and industrial areas around Chesterfield and Rotherham before its confluence with the Don just east of Sheffield.

The Dearne drains the high ground to the south and east of Huddersfield and to the west of Barnsley. The steeply sided Dearne valley opens out at Bretton Hall Country Park before passing through Barnsley, Wath and Mexborough, entering the River Don at Conisborough.

Throughout the entire catchment, evidence of the area’s industrial past can be found. Most of the traditional industries, particularly coal and steel, are a vague shadow of what they were 50 years ago, but their impact is still widely visible across the region. Despite this, massive environmental improvements have been achieved, not least in the waterways of the catchment. Here the rivers and streams have benefitted from huge investments in improving water quality with the result that the majority of the once indigenous fish species have been successfully re-introduced. The objective of the Don Catchment Rivers Trust is to take these improvements forward and to restore habitats and species in a manner which fits with objectives of the Water Framework Directive. In particular, there are issues of fish passage with weirs impounding flows on rivers and streams across the area. Physical alterations to watercourses, including canalisation, are also a priority for action, as is the control and eradication of invasive species.

The Don Catchment Rivers Trust is seeking a Project Officer to help deliver the improvements that the Trust has committed itself to achieving. This is an exciting and challenging opportunity for a dynamic and enthusiastic person to be involved in the continued restoration of what is regarded as one of the most rapidly improving river systems in Britain.

The successful candidate should have a background history as a self-starter and bring experience in the field of habitat restoration and management. They will also have a working knowledge of invasive plant species control, project management experience, excellent communication skills and proven ability to work with a wide range of stakeholders, including volunteers. The ability to produce clear and concise reports and to give occasional presentations to range of organisations is also a requirement. The post will initially be based in Rotherham but the successful candidate will need to travel regularly throughout the Don catchment and provide their own transport. They will report to the DCRT Trust Manager and be guided by a small Executive Committee drawn from the Trust.

We anticipate the post will commence in January 2012 for 24 months but with the chance of extension, subject to funding and performance. Pay will be in accordance with National Joint Council pay scales, commencing at Spinal Column Point 30 (currently £25,472 pa). No overtime will be paid. Expenses will be paid in accordance with the Trust’s rates.
