The WSRT is
a charitable trust formed in 1992 by a volunteer group
of like-minded individuals, anglers, owners, river
managers, scientists and environmentalists all of
whom viewed with dismay the rapid decline of lowland
river salmon.
The primary
objectives of the trust are the advancement of education
and research into the conservation and restoration
of lowland river salmon populations, their habitat
and the entire ecology. Reduced government funding
has placed severe limitations on the authorities ability
to research and correct the problems. Not withstanding
much co-operative work the decline has yet to be reversed.
There is much discussion between the parties on the
causes and priorities for correction. There is unanimity
on one matter, wild lowland salmon stocks could cease
to be self sustaining unless the many adverse pressures
they face are corrected.
Without intervention
they are threatened with extinction.
