
Thames21 is an environmental charity working with communities to create clean, safe and sustainable waterside environments on London's rivers, tributaries and canals.
Our aims
Thames21 work hand-in-hand with local communities, individuals, community service volunteers, Local Authorities, probation services, schools and businesses to improve and maintain our waterways by:-
- removing litter
- creating new habitats for wildlife, flora and fauna
- installing artwork
- promoting safe and equitable access to our waterways
- removing graffiti
- monitoring, reserach and education projects
- involving local communities in all aspects of our work to prevent pollution and promote sustainable behaviour
Our achievements
In the last ten years, Thames21 have worked with over 20,000 volunteers and cleared 10,000 tonnes of litter from London's rivers and canals. It has educated 8,000 school children, worked with the probation service to involve community service volunteers and installed many pieces of waterside artwork.
Our history
Thames21 developed from a partnership programme that has been, and continues to be supported by EnCams (Keep Britain Tidy Campaign), the Port of London Authority, the Environment Agency, Thames Water, British Waterways London, the Corporation of London and 19 local authorities.
